This DVD (optional VHS tape) provides an overview of principles and techniques of Behavioral Family management, an innovative approach to teaching coping skills and reducing stress in families where chronic mental illnesses are present. A number of controlled studies have documented the effectiveness of this modality in preventing relapse, rehospitalization and difficulties in social functioning. Family education, communication skills, and problem-solving skills are the three major components of Behavioral Family management. The video demonstrates how a therapist works with a family in each of these areas by showing actual sessions of a therapist and the family of a young man who has schizophrenia. The specific competencies requires of therapists conducting this form of family treatment are highlighted.
