Written
in collaboration with members of the National Alliance of the Mentally
III and field tested in NY, CA, NM, VA, OR and TX, this module provides
detailed, step-by-step instructions and guidelines for professionals
and paraprofessionals who are working clinically with the seriously
mentally ill and who must develop collaboration with family members.
The manual includes sections on how to form an alliance with family
members, bringing relatives and consumers into the treatment team,
providing education, information and coping resources to families, and
teaching communication and problem-solving skills. There are sections
for working with the relatives of mentally ill children and
adolescents, mentally ill offenders, and ethnic and cultural
minorities. Sample sessions and dialogues are provided and a
DVD or VHS TAPE for demonstrating family coping skills can be used in
psycho-educational programs.
